James Spruill

James Spruill began barbering in 1965 at the Park Avenue Tonsorial Barber Shop, in Washington, DC. He later opened his own shop in 1970 and currently owns and operates Spruill's Bluebird Barbershop, on Georgia Ave., Washington, DC. He has served as an instructor and mentor to many aspiring barbers, having trained six barber instructors and 30 licensed barbers. Mr. Spruill has given more than 150,000 free haircuts to homeless and indigent residents, including shaves and haircuts for elderly patients in hospitals and nursing homes.
He organizes and convenes community meetings on HIV/AIDS awareness and is currently a member of the Columbia Barbering and Cosmetology Board and the J.F.Cook Masonic Lodge #10, Washington, DC. He holds membership with the National Association of Barber Boards of America and was inducted into the Barber Hall of Fame in 2008.
