Howard grew up in Newark, Ohio, the son of a local barber and a wonderful mother, and was the second of six children. He started working at age 8 in a local chicken hatchery at 35¢ per hour. He carried newspapers, picked strawberries, picked potatoes, washed cars, mowed grass, raked leaves, shoveled snow, pumped gas, sacked groceries, worked construction and still had time to go dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. He served in the military as paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division.

He graduated from Ohio State Barber College and began a 40 year career as a barber, opening his own barber shop at age 23. He married a beautiful nurse named Joyce and has been married for the past 43 years. They are blessed with a son Todd, his wife Jayn and their two children, Jenna and Jack. He completed a business degree at Columbus State Community College, obtained a real estate brokers license, and served in all sorts of church and community activities.

He worked with the youth in scouting and soccer. Howard acquired a pilot license and flew airplanes for a hobby as well as soccer, volleyball, softball, fly fishing, hunting and golf. Howard is currently serving as executive director of the Ohio State Barber Board, vice president of the National Barber Association, and was inducted into the National Barber Association Hall of Fame in 2006.
